Economic Value of the South Australian Oyster Industry
Business turnover impacts
- The total direct business turnover (output) equated to $77.9 million in 2020/21.
- Direct business turnover generated in SA oyster farming enterprises summed to $43.7 million in 2020/21.
- The output generated in SA by associated downstream activities (processing, transport, retail and food service) summed to $34.2 million in 2020/21.
- Flow-ons to other sectors of the State economy added another $100.2 million in business turnover in 2020/21. The sectors most affected were the trade, manufacturing and property and business sectors.
Value added effects
- In 2020/21, total oyster farming-related value added in South Australia was over $95.8 million, $21 million generated by oyster farming directly, $16.4 million generated directly by downstream activities and almost $58.4 million generated in other sectors of the state economy.
Employment
- In 2020/21, SA oyster farming was responsible for the direct employment of approximately 335 people and downstream activities created employment for approximately 248 people.
- Flow-on business activity was estimated to generate a further 433 jobs. These jobs were concentrated in the trade, manufacturing and business services sectors.
- In total the South Australian oyster industry provided 1016 jobs for the state of South Australia in 2020/21.
